On its Web site, Telmex increased the speed advertised in its most expensive phone-and-Internet package to 4 megabits a second, double the previous speed, while keeping the monthly price at 999 pesos ($75). Megacable, Mexicos largest cable- television operator, also offers as much as 4 megabits.
Telmex, Mexicos biggest fixed-line phone company, is pushing the faster speeds as Megacable and cable rivals controlled by Grupo Televisa SA lure customers with packages of TV, Internet and phone service. In the 12 months through June, Telmex lost 245,000 phone lines to cable and mobile-phone operators, compared with a year earlier.
The phone carrier plans to begin a project by early next year to use fiber-optic wires to increase speeds even further in some areas, Chief Innovation Officer Marco Galvan said earlier this month.
Telmex dropped 42 centavos, or 3.4 percent, to 11.87 pesos at 4 p.m. New York time in Mexico City trading. Megacable slid 6 centavos to 22.81 pesos, and Televisa fell 1.08 pesos to 48.77 pesos.
While Telmex previously advertised its best speed as only 2 megabits a second, the company had been providing 4 megabits to customers who called and requested it, Galvan said in a Sept. 4 interview.
