The feature unveiled Thursday expands upon speech-recognition technology that YouTube began using to make captions available on a limited number of videos late last year.
YouTubes audience will be able to request captions at the press of a button. Video producers will also be able to download the automated captions and improve upon them.
For now, YouTubes captioning tool will only work on videos with English audio, although there are plans to include more languages. The English audio, however, can be translated into 50 different languages.
YouTube, owned by Google, is the Webs most popular video site. [...]

Comedy Centrals decision to yank two of the most popular shows on Hulu - “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” - in a dispute over splitting ad revenue is the latest blow to the entertainment industrys attempts to make money off ads that run with free video.
Yet Hulus most viable alternative - charging for access to some videos - could turn off viewers and crimp the sites explosive growth. Ultimately, the remedy to Hulus current troubles could leave the site even worse off, a poor shadow of its former self.
Many viewers are drawn to Hulu because of its ease [...]

So the European head of New York-based Tremor Media Inc., an advertising network, knows which Web sites to market to the German carmakers ad agency.
“We go to them and say here are 150 sites with video content that is attractive to that target group,” said Baudis, who works with Volkswagens ad agency, Mediacom, a unit of WPP Plc, the worlds biggest advertising company. “Targeted advertising is more efficient. It costs less money to reach the target. Thats the beauty of it.”

“When I saw kids as young as 8, 9 years old literally doing facial contortions as they killed and dismembered people, it was pretty shocking. And I think what happened is a lot of other people got shocked as well,” Walsh recalls. “I dont think we want our kids culture defined by killing, mayhem and dismemberment as entertainment.”
That first report card, which singled out bloody first-person shooter games “Doom” and “Duke Nukem,” made an instant splash on Capitol Hill in 1996 and made the annual reports issued each holiday season by Walshs National Institute on Media and the Family a [...]

The eclectic cast of characters starring in YouTubes most-watched videos of 2009 served as a reminder of the quirky appeal of a Web site that accepts about 20 hours of new video every minute.
The list released Wednesday marks the first time that YouTube has ranked its most-watched videos in any year since its 2005 inception.
YouTubes 2009 star was Susan Boyle, the frumpy Scottish woman who mesmerized the world with a heartwarming rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” on a British talent show in April.
Boyle, now 48, ended up taking second place in that competition, but no one came close to [...]

One big reason: Blu-ray discs wont play on standard DVD players found in cars, computers and bedrooms.
Now Hollywood - which is banking on the pricier Blu-ray discs to help lift sagging home video sales - is stepping up its efforts to win customers. Studios are packaging Blu-ray discs with regular versions on DVDs, and throwing in so-called “digital copies,” which can play on computers and iPods.
Over the past month or so, “Up,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and many other hit movies were released in such combo packs. Universal is releasing its “Bourne” movies on “flipper” discs with Blu-ray [...]

The computer-generated video by Taiwans Apple Daily newspaper depicts the night of the Nov. 27 accident as its animators imagined it. Woods and his wife, Elin, are shown having a heated argument at home before she chases after his SUV, waving a golf club. Woods then crashes.
The clip took the Internet by storm amid intense media scrutiny of Woods personal life.
The clip was part of the “Action News” initiative launched two weeks ago by Apple Daily that uses animation to reconstruct incidents of rape, murder and other violence or sensational events.
On two consecutive days last month the Taipei municipal government [...]

EMIs videos on Vevo will join content from Universal Music Group, which holds the largest stake in the new venture. Sony Music Entertainment is also an equity partner along with Abu Dhabi Media Co., an arm of the Abu Dhabi government.
EMI, which is based in London, will not take a stake in the company.
Discussions continue with Warner Music Group Corp., the only major recording company not yet involved with Vevo. Warner Music has been separately developing its own artist-branded video channels on YouTube.
Faced with declining sales of compact discs, recording companies are experimenting with new ways of distributing their music [...]

Ive got recommendations in all three categories - listed here from least to most expensive. All of these record HD video and have “HDMI” output connections that let you view your masterpieces on an HD display.

Kodak Zi8 ($180)
Full HD in your pocket for under $200? Whats not to like?
Kodak delivers this bargain by asking you to supply the memory card it needs to store footage. But you can buy an 8-gigabyte card (enough for two hours of HD video) for less than $50, which means you could still come out ahead with this model over other inexpensive HD cameras from [...]

Adconion Media Group said Tuesday it bought Joost assets for an undisclosed sum. These include the technology behind Joosts video platform and the Joost trademark.
About 12 Joost employees - the majority - were given jobs at Adconion, which plans to continue operating Joost.com as an entertainment site.
Joost, which had been shopping for a buyer for several months, had earlier approached cable TV operators Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc. about a sale.
The site was started with much fanfare by Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, the people behind the Internet phone service Skype and the file-sharing service Kazaa.
Joost turned to [...]
