In a Tuesday meeting to celebrate Yahoos 15th anniversary, Bartz reminded reporters that Apple still struggled after Jobs became CEO in 1997. That marked his return to a company he had co-founded two decades earlier.
It wasnt until Jobs unveiled the iPod in late 2001 that Apples profits and stock price began to soar again. Apple has become even more prosperous in the last few years as the company developed ever-sleeker computers and trendy gadgets, such as the iPhone and the iPad, a computer tablet scheduled to hit the market later this month.
Jobs “knew the DNA (at Apple) better than anyone [...]

In its latest attempt to make its Web site more compelling, Yahoo Inc. is plugging its services into the rapidly growing craze of posting short messages, or “tweets,” on Twitter.
Although Yahoo planned to announce the Twitter partnership Wednesday, most of the new features wont be available until later this year. Among other things, anyone with a Twitter account will be able to tweet and see the updates of people theyre tracking while logged into Yahoos Web site.
One change occurred Tuesday, when Yahoo started to show a wider range of Twitter updates in its search results - something that Google Inc. [...]

The all-cash deal marks another step in Yahoo CEO Carol Bartzs effort to jettison services that have been struggling or dont fit with the Internet companys efforts to focus more on its news, entertainment and communications features.
Yahoo already has closed several unprofitable services and last month agreed to sell e-mail provider Zimbra to VMWare Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
HotJobs sale price reflects how far it has fallen since Yahoo bought it for $439 million in cash and stock nearly eight years ago. In an ironic twist, Yahoo had to outbid Monster.coms holding company to buy HotJobs.
As often happens in acquisitions, [...]

The announcement by both companies Monday didnt disclose the financial terms of the agreement, which allows Yahoo to continue posting AP content on its site.
The AP says it is still negotiating to renew its online licensing agreements with two other companies with far deeper pockets, Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Google stopped posting fresh AP content on its Web site in late December.
Stung by the APs first downturn in revenue in years, APs management has said the cooperative needs to make more money from the online rights to its stories, photographs and video as more people flock to the Web [...]

“It was a little tougher internally than I think I had anticipated,” Bartz, 61, said in an interview at Yahoos headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. “I did move fast, but this is a big job.”
Bartz, who marks her one-year anniversary as CEO next week, is striving to keep Yahoos 15-year-old site relevant in an era of Twitter and Facebook. Yahoos sales have fallen for four straight quarters, and its stock trailed the Nasdaq Composite Index in the past year. Bartz expects Yahoos sales and profit to grow [...]

Provocative remarks by Yahoo Inc. CEO Carol Bartz at an investor conference in New York this week illustrate how major Internet channels and niche publications are benefiting from the Woods controversy.
Known for her off-color commentary, Bartz told financial analysts Tuesday that the Woods story is “better than Michael Jackson dying” for helping Yahoo make money, because it is easier to sell ads against salacious content than morbid stories.
“Its kind of hard to put an ad up next to a funeral,” she said.
In response to a question, Bartz even said Woods will “absolutely” help Yahoo make its numbers this quarter, a [...]

The quest to find out what happened to Jackson in his final hours on June 25 and celebrate his legacy elevated the late entertainer to the top of the Internets search charts for 2009. On Yahoo, it ended singer Britney Spears four-year reign on top.
The annual lists released Tuesday were compiled separately by Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., which combined handle two-thirds of the worlds Internet searches.
Jackson also grabbed the top spot on the third-largest U.S. search engine, Microsoft Corp.s Bing, which announced its rankings Sunday. AOL, which relies on Googles search technology, also had Jackson at No. 1.

The quest to find out what happened to Jackson in his final hours on June 25 and celebrate his legacy elevated the late entertainer to the top of the Internet companys annual breakdown of the most frequent online search requests.
The self-proclaimed King of Pop ended singer Britney Spears four-year reign atop Yahoos search rankings.
The list released Tuesday is meant to provide a reading on our cultural pulse. It may not be the best barometer, given that Yahoo Inc. ranks a distant second to Google Inc. in Internet search. Google plans to release its own list of popular searches later this [...]

Beginning Thursday, Yahoo will mine the short messages posted on Twitter to find fresher information about hot topics.
Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. had earlier announced plans to incorporate Twitter messages into search results, but Yahoo said it will be the first among them to include such “tweets” on its main search results.
The addition comes at a pivotal time for Yahoo. The company, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is bogged down in a three-year financial slump partly because it has losing ground in the lucrative Internet search market to Google and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft.
The Twitter twist is the latest sign [...]

The Food and Drug Administration is hearing from dozens of drug and advertising executives at a two-day meeting on Internet marketing of medical products.
The agency has agreed to consider developing rules for online ads after companies complained that the guidelines for traditional media - which require detailed lists of side effects - have left them hamstrung on the Web.
As drug maker and media companies push for increased online access, consumer advocates say the FDA must respond with increased enforcement, and that industry should pay for the effort.
Drug makers spent more than $4.3 billion on patient-targeted advertisements last year, though online [...]
