Yahoo, responding to public reaction to Internet pictures of the dancers, said the so-called Hack Girls didnt reflect the purpose of the event, which was to showcase the companys technology. The incident was regrettable and wont happen again, the Sunnyvale, California-based company said.

Yahoo, led by Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz, holds events called Hack Days, which encourage outside developers to build applications for Yahoos services. The company has held Hack Days at other locations around the world, including New York earlier this month.

“Its certainly not the message we want to send about our values here at Yahoo,” Chris Yeh, head of Yahoos developer network, said in a blog posting. “Hack Days are about making everyone feel welcome, including women coders and technologists.”

Yahoo fell 28 cents to $16.94 at 2:03 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares had risen 41 percent this year before today.
