Routers play an important role as the Internets traffic cops, shunting packets of data to their destinations. Those placed at the Internets backbone - the main arteries for traffic - need the most capacity given the amount of data passing through. These machines are known as core routers, and Cisco competes in this market with Juniper Networks Inc., which has updated its products more recently than Cisco.
Cisco, the worlds largest maker of computer networking gear, said it is replacing its aging CRS-1 core router, which was introduced in 2004, with a model that is three times faster, the [...]

Those changes, among others, were unveiled by co-presidents Jason Hirschhorn, 38, and Mike Jones, 34, this week following the abrupt departure of CEO Owen Van Natta in February after just 10 months on the job.
The two remaining executives, who once shared a single office with Van Natta and now remain in it together, declined to comment much on Van Nattas departure, other than to say his decision to leave was between him and parent News Corp.s chief digital officer Jonathan Miller.
They also shed no new light on the ongoing ad-sharing deal with Google Inc., which forms the backbone of MySpaces [...]

The new bicycling directions available on Google Maps starting Wednesday supplement the guidance already provided to motorists and pedestrians. The biking directions initially will be available only for the United States.
Google spent the past six months tweaking its mapping service so it could recommend routes that would steer bicyclists away from big hills and heavily congested streets. The feature can be used to pinpoint bicycling trails in more than 150 cities.
Bike directions already have been available on some smaller Web sites, but Google is the first major Internet mapping service provider to add the option.

Wireless Ink Corp., which runs the Winksite service, claims that Facebook Mobile and Google Buzz are infringing a patent issued in October. In a complaint filed yesterday in federal court in Manhattan, the company is seeking cash compensation and a court order to prevent further use of its invention.
The patent is related to ways of offering content that is accessible by mobile devices, Wireless Ink lawyer Jeremy Pitcock said in an interview. The closely held software maker develops Web sites that can be made available over [...]

More than 50 companies are involved in the store initially, Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering, said yesterday at a software developers event at Googles headquarters in Mountain View, California. The company will take a 20 percent cut of application sales and charge a one-time fee of $100.
“Its a great way to discover, to find and install applications into your business,” Gundotra said. The marketplace offers “not just any applications, applications that are deeply integrated with Google Apps.”

The findings were outlined in a company report on audits of 102 supplier facilities conducted in 2009. That was a year in which questions about the practices of one of Apples suppliers came into focus after the suicide of a Chinese worker who held a sensitive job handling iPhones.
Along with many other technology companies, Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., relies heavily on foreign contractors to build its products. Monitoring their labor practices be difficult, and Apple has caught heat in the past on this issue.
The company said in its latest report that “by making social responsibility a fundamental part of [...]

Senkut, Gil and their dining circle are alumni of Google Inc. Since going public six years ago, Mountain View, California-based Google has generated more than $170 billion for its employees and investors. Many of the millionaires the company has produced are active angel investors, attempting to add another zero to their bank accounts and another company to their list of accomplishments, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports in the March 8 issue. “I feel like we have such a strong network, its almost like weve recreated Google outside of the Google walls,” says Andrea Zurek, a 39-year-old backer of 26 startups and, until [...]

“I dont think were out of the economic situation yet,” Chief Executive Officer Selina Lo said in an interview. Lo was one of the executives who built Alteon WebSystems Inc. and sold it to Nortel Networks Corp. for $7.8 billion in 2000. “If the business is solid, we can wait for the right time.”
Instead of pursuing an IPO, Ruckus will introduce new products that help wireless carriers integrate Wi-Fi with their networks and reduce congestion, said Lo, 50. The five-year-old company will turn an operating profit [...]

Google should shorten the time it keeps the original photos from one year to six months, regulators also said in a letter to the company obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday.
In a statement, Google said its need to retain Street View images for one year is “legitimate and justified.”
The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., said it also already posts notifications on its Web site about where its Street View cameras are clicking. The alert system on Thursday indicated Googles picture-taking vehicles have been cruising the streets of Cagiliari, Italy, Nantes, France and possibly other nearby cities.
